Hexamine (hexamethylenetetramine) is primarily used as a hardening agent in the production of phenolic resins, molding compounds, and, in its solid form, as fuel tablets for camping stoves. It is also used in pharmaceuticals as a urinary antiseptic (methenamine), a rubber vulcanizing accelerator, a corrosion inhibitor, and a precursor to explosives like RDX.

Key Applications of Hexamine:
  • Resins and Plastics: Acts as a curing agent (hardener) for phenol-formaldehyde resins used in binders, abrasives, and molding powders.
  • Fuel Source: Solid hexamine tablets are widely used as a smokeless fuel for portable camping stoves and in laboratory settings.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) by hydrolyzing into formaldehyde in acidic urine.
  • Rubber and Textiles: Acts as a vulcanization accelerator for rubber and a curing/fixative agent in textile production.
  • Explosives: Used as a raw material in the manufacture of RDX and HMX, which are high-power explosives.
  • Other Uses: Employed as a corrosion inhibitor, in photographic developers, and as a food preservative (E239) in certain products

Epoxy resin is a highly versatile, two-part thermosetting polymer used for adhesive, coating, casting, and laminating applications across industrial and DIY sectors. It creates strong, durable, moisture-resistant bonds on materials like wood, metal, and glass, and is frequently used for sealing, casting jewelry, creating river tables, repairing items, and in electronics for insulation.
  • Coating and Sealing: Applied to surfaces like countertops, flooring, and metal to create a durable, waterproof, and corrosion-resistant, high-gloss finish.
  • Adhesives: Acts as a structural adhesive for repairing broken items, such as ceramics, wood, and plastic, forming a strong, permanent bond.
  • Casting and Art: Used in molds to create decorative objects, jewelry, and furniture (e.g., resin river tables) by mixing with pigments, glitter, or dried flowers.
  • Industrial/Marine: Used for laminating, composites, and fiberglass reinforcement in construction, boat building, and automotive applications.
  • Electronics: Employed as an encapsulant for potting transformers, circuits, and components due to its excellent electrical insulation properties.
  • Mixing: Epoxy requires a precise mix of a resin and a hardener (often a 1:1 ratio) to cure properly.
  • Safety: Always work in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and use proper safety equipment to avoid skin irritation.
  • Conditions: Best applied in temperatures around  (); it may not cure properly below  or may set too fast above .
  • Versatility: Epoxy can be modified with additives for higher electrical conductivity, flexibility, or specific colors.

Hydrocarbon resins are low molecular weight, thermoplastic amorphous polymers, typically derived from petroleum-based C5 (aliphatic) or C9 (aromatic) feedstocks. These resins are used as tackifiers, modifiers, and binders in adhesives, paints, printing inks, and rubber compounding to improve adhesion, viscosity, and stability.
  • Key Properties: They are generally soluble in organic solvents, possess low molecular weight (400−5000 g/mol400 minus 5000 g/mol400−5000 g/mol), and exhibit high glass transition temperatures, allowing them to melt during processing and harden at room temperature.
  • Applications:
    • Adhesives: Used as tackifiers in hot-melt (HMA) and pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA).
    • Rubber: Acting as reinforcing agents and processing aids in tire and footwear manufacturing.
    • Coatings/Inks: Enhancing gloss, fast drying, and film hardness in paints, varnishes, and printing inks.
    • Road Marking: Used in hot-melt road marking paints.
